Wood-burning stove sets Decatur home ablaze

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Decatur firefighters responded to a house fire Wednesday afternoon that started from a wood-burning stove.

Around 4:37 p.m., the Decatur Fire Department arrived on-scene at 515 Gault St., where they saw significant fire and smoke at the back of the building. The firefighters quickly worked to extinguish the fire as four other companies arrived to assist in deploying the hose, roof ventilation, utility control and search operations.

The fire eventually spread to the walls and then roof of the building, which firefighters say made the job extra challenging as the roof system had many layers.

The crews extinguished the flames and had everything controlled by 5:09 p.m.

After investigation, officials determined that the fire had started on the first floor of the building from behind a wood-burning stove, as the occupant of the house had earlier claimed.

The Decatur Fire Department reported that one of their firefighters was injured during the operation. No information was provided on the extent of their injuries.
