Wonder Woman Star Lynda Carter On Drag Queens & Her First Gay Bar

In case you needed a reminder, Lynda Carter is a wonder woman, especially when it comes to being an ally to the LGBTQ+ community.
Speaking with GLAAD’s Anthony Allen Ramos, Carter opened up about her long-time connection to the queer community, drag queens, and her first time ever in a gay bar.
While Carter was filming the Wonder Woman TV series in the ‘70s, she said her friend and make-up artist Way Bandy took her to go to a gay bar. “We pranced in and all the men were dancing together. It was [a] very audacious New York gay bar. It was hysterically funny. I just enjoyed being around my gay and lesbian friends so so much,” she recalled.
From there, the conversation moved to politics and Carter shared her thoughts on the recent attacks against drag queens and accusations of grooming. Carter hilariously shut it down when asked whether or not she thinks it’s appropriate for people under 18 to attend drag events. “What I think the most scary thing is at story times and birthday parties are clowns,” she said.
Her response is in keeping with her decades of vocal allyship with the LGBTQ+ community. In June, she wrote a tweet making her feelings very clear on the subject.
“I didn’t write Wonder Woman, but if you want to argue that she is somehow not a queer or trans icon, then you’re not paying attention,” she explained. “Every time someone comes up to me and says that WW helped them while they were closeted, it reminds me how special the role is.”
She also spoke out in defense of trans people in July. “I cannot think of anything that helps women’s rights less than pinning the blame on trans women. They face so much violence and scrutiny as is. Leave them alone and focus on the real war on women. It’s happening in the courts and legislatures around this country,” she wrote on Twitter.
Carter isn’t just Wonder Woman, she’s a wonderful woman and forever our Amazonian qween.
