According to The Hollywood Reporter, the legendary star best known for her portrayal of TV’s Wonder Woman, will play a significant role in the show.

Carter will play the President of the United States in what’s billed as a recurring role in season two of the new show that stars Melissa Benoist as heroine Kara Danvers. To be fair, it’s a pretty big coup in terms of bagging new cast members for its sophomore season that airs later this year, especially in the form of such a high profile name. Already, we’ve seen well-known actress Calista Flockhart (’Ally McBeal’; ‘Brothers and Sisters’) appear in a large chunk of season one, as well as ‘True Blood’s’ fresh-faced actor Mehcad Brooks, so it’s building up a solid ensemble thus far.

Carter, who became a global icon after donning the famous leotard between 1975 until 1979, won the sought-after hero role after being crowned Miss World America in 1972. After that, she went on to have a varied but long-lasting career in television, movies, and as a video games voice artist.

Show producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg made no secret at just how big capturing Carter was for the role; not only was it a dream come true for them as fans but it’ll definitely expand the show’s audience with the right kind of attention. The pair had their sights on the former ‘Wonder Woman’ actress in season one but due to each others schedules couldn’t make it happen. But even then Kreisberg was convinced they’d secure her for the part: “We’re going to do it, we’ll just do it next year,“ he preempted.

Despite Carter’s long and illustrious television career, she’s been virtually off the acting radar since a part in ‘Two and a Half Men’ back in 2013 as herself. Notably she’s already appeared in an episode of ‘Smallville’ as Moria Sullivan, Chloe’s mum. While on the subject of ‘Smallville’, fans were left a little miffed when ‘Teen Wolf’s’ Tyler Hoechlin was announced as Superman/Clark Kent for ‘Supergirl’s’ upcoming season, rather than bring back fan fave Tom Welling for the role he played so well for 217 episodes that spanned 10 seasons. That said, with Welling now 39, the show probably wanted someone younger, and Hoechlin is 11 years his senior.

‘Supergirl’ season two returns to Sky 1 thus autumn.
