What Women Should Know About Obamacare

When President Barack Obama took a stance to keep his federal health care reforms intact this week, he was actually defending a few major facets of women's health care.

Republicans in the House of Representatives slipped some little-talked-about language into the resolution they passed that would exempt bosses from complying with Obamacare's Women's Health Amendment if they oppose it for "religious or moral" reasons, according to the National Women's Law Center.

"This means that bosses could impose their religious beliefs on their employees, or block their employees’ access to needed women’s health care for vague and undefined “moral” reasons," the center said.

So, if your boss doesn't believe in birth control, under the Republicans' failed version of the bill, your employer wouldn't have had to pay for it. (Talk about micromanaging.)

Conversely, the president believes women are capable of making their own health decisions without interference from their bosses. And Senate stopped that resolution in its tracks, as they'd promised.

Women stand to gain a lot when it comes to preventive care under Obamacare. For starters, insurance companies will be forced to stop charging women more for insurance coverage than they do for men. Women will have more access to free preventive care: Screenings for gestational diabetes, HIV or domestic violence are available without co-pays.
