Women charged with abuse leading to death of ‘vulnerable’ person living in Chesterfield County facility

CHESTERFIELD, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Two South Carolina women are accused of abandoning a person who later died residing in a facility for people with disabilities.

According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, 27-year-old Janique Darrelle Stanton and Amani My’Shawna McCray, 19, were charged April 25 in Chesterfield County with abuse or neglect resulting in death of a vulnerable adult.

According to state officials, the suspects knew the victim was not supposed to be left alone for any amount of time, but left her alone in her apartment for an undetermined amount of time. The victim lived in CHESCO Services housing, which serves Chesterfield, Marlboro, Kershaw, Richland and Lancaster counties.

When the suspects returned to the apartment, and found the victim in respiratory distress, they reportedly failed to neither contact emergency personnel in a timely fashion nor administer CPR.

The victim died before EMS arrived, SLED officials said.

Stanton, of Bennettsville, and McCray, of Cheraw, were booked at the Chesterfield County Detention Center. The case will be prosecuted by the 4th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

SLED’s Ashley Burch is the prosecuting officer.
