Woman wanted in Delaware dies in police chase that ended with shooting in Chester: police

CHESTER, Pa. - A woman who was wanted in Delaware has died after police say she led them on a chase into Delaware County and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement Tuesday.

Wilmington Police say the entire incident began just before noon, when officers responded to the 300 block of North Madison Street to arrest a suspect wanted in a shooting that happened last December.

Police say the suspect, a 23-year-old woman, attempted to run from police and rammed multiple marked Wilmington Police vehicles before getting onto I-95 North and fleeing into Pennsylvania.

Police gave chase and pursued the woman into Pennsylvania, where they say the suspect eventually crashed in Chichester and allegedly fired a gun at police. At that time, two Delaware troopers discharged their service firearms.

The suspect then got into another vehicle and drove into Chester, where she crashed into another structure and allegedly ran into a home. Police say she then got into a third car and attempted to flee.

At that time, a total of 10 law enforcement officers discharged their firearms, striking the vehicle and suspect. The suspect, who has not yet been identified, ultimately died from her injuries.

One Wilmington officer was taken to a hospital to be evaluated for a minor injury. No other injuries to police have been reported.

The chase and ensuing standoff caused officials to shut down I-95 from exits 4-6 for about an hour.

The Delaware County District Attorney’s office is now investigating the incident.
