Woman Thought She Won $75 Playing the Lottery — Turns Out, It Was Actually a $50K Prize!

The medical worker is now the fifth top-prize winner on the game, according to Maryland Lottery officials

A Maryland woman thought she won $75 playing a scratch-off game, but ended up with a payout over 600 times more than that, according to lottery officials.

The woman, who used the nickname “Baby Grand” while claiming her winnings, initially thought she only matched three black words and two red words for a $75 prize, Maryland Lottery officials said in a release on April 29.

The medical worker "likes to play crossword and bingo scratch-offs since the extended-play tickets build excitement and help to pass the time," officials noted.

“After I finish scratching my tickets, I always get out my phone and scan them on the Lottery app,” the woman explained.

State lottery officials said that when "Baby Grand" scanned her ticket, she realized she won the top prize on the Deluxe Crossword scratch-off: $50,000!

“I was in shock. I didn’t believe it. I scanned it 10 times to make sure,” she told lottery officials.

Despite what she initially thought, she actually matched four red words and four black words to secure the top prize, becoming the fifth top-prize winner on the game.

She now plans to use her prize to pay off bills and put the rest in the bank. The Exxon in Chester, where the winning ticket was sold, will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning scratch-off.

"Three $50,000 prizes remain unclaimed," officials said. "There are also eight $10,000 prizes unclaimed along with prizes ranging from $5 to 1,000."
