Woman sues ex-Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin over techniques similar to ones that killed George Floyd

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of murdering George Floyd, is facing fresh allegations that accuse him of using excessive force in a similar manner in another case.

Patricia “Patty” Dawn Welch Day filed a lawsuit against Chauvin and fellow Minneapolis Officer Ellen Jensen on Tuesday over actions they took during an incident on January 17, 2020, KARE 11 reported.

Day admits that she had been drinking that night when her car became stuck in a snowbank and someone called 911 to report a driver who appeared to be intoxicated.

But she claims when the officers arrived, she was “violently yanked” from her vehicle and tossed her to the ground, causing her to fracture her tooth and sustain multiple injuries before being handcuffed.

“I was not resisting. I was not being belligerent,” Day told KARE 11. “I was simply trying to show them that there were no keys in the ignition of my car.”

During the encounter, Day claims that Chauvin pressed his knee into her back while she was restrained, the same tactic “he would later do to snuff the life out of George Floyd,” she wrote in court documents obtained by TMZ.

She accused Jensen of failing to intervene during the incident, claiming that body cam footage from the incident was ignored by the Minneapolis Police Department, allowing the officers to escape accountability.

Day is now seeking $9 million in compensatory damages from from Chauvin, Jensen and the department, along with unspecified punitive damages

Chauvin is currently serving over 22 years in prison for his 2021 convictions of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s death.

Last November, he was stabbed 22 times by another inmate, getting released from the hospital the next month.
