MIDVALE, Utah (ABC4) — A woman was transported to a hospital in critical condition after being stabbed Wednesday in Midvale.

The man who allegedly stabbed the woman, Christopher Shawn Shaffer, 20, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony; threat/use of dangerous weapon in fight, a third-degree felony; and threat of violence, a class A misdemeanor, the Unified Police Department said.

The investigation began just after 10 p.m. Wednesday when Unified Police received reports of “an assault with a weapon,” the affidavit states.

When police arrived at the scene, they said they found a female victim who had been stabbed several times. The woman was reportedly transported to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition.

During their investigation, police said they learned the victim and Shaffer’s recent partner “had previous issues” spanning several years. The recent partner reportedly told police the victim “constantly harassed” her over dating issues involving Shaffer.

When speaking with police, Shaffer’s recent partner alleged the victim was threatening her via phone and said she was going to show up at her apartment, the affidavit states. “She said the victim came to her apartment and a fight ensued outside of the apartment.”

The recent partner initially told police that she had stabbed the victim and that Shaffer had nothing to do with it, but after speaking with witnesses and watching surveillance video, police said they learned Shaffer interjected himself in the fight and stabbed the victim in the back.

“Additional threats were heard by witnesses that [Shaffer] was verbally stating he was going to kill the victim and the victim was going to die,” the affidavit states.

Shaffer was taken into custody and reportedly admitted to police he stabbed the victim, followed the victim in a vehicle after, and confronted the victim and others.

Shaffer was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on the previously mentioned charges.
