WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) — A German tourist swimming off a Maui beach has lost an arm in a shark attack.
Hawaii media report the woman, who was in her 20s, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition after she was attacked Wednesday afternoon. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports her right arm appeared to have been severed below the shoulder.
Two of her friends and a kayaker helped her to shore. Witness Andree Conley-Kapoi of Makawao told the Maui News efforts to revive the woman appeared to be unsuccessful.
Maui County spokesman Rod Antone told the newspaper the woman was swimming in an area known as White Rock in Makena. She was about 50 yards from shore, according to officials.
Helicopters were sent over the coastline to check for the shark, according to the newspaper. Department of Land and Natural Resources were warning the public to stay out of the water.
