Woman killed in overnight Providence shooting; 7th shooting this week

A woman was killed in a shooting just after midnight Friday in the Providence neighborhood, according to the Tallahassee Police Department.

TPD responded to the scene in the 1500 block of Lake Avenue, just off Lake Bradford Road, around 12:30 a.m.

The woman was found dead in the driver's seat of a vehicle in the parking lot of the Glen Hollow apartment complex, according to TPD spokesperson Heather Merritt.

Merritt added that it is unclear if the woman was the intended target of the gunfire.

Investigators ask that anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call TPD at (850) 891-4200 or Crime Stoppers at (850) 574-TIPS.

This is the seventh shooting in the past week to occur in Tallahassee and Leon County, leaving a woman dead and two others — including a teenage girl — injured.

Recent shooting coverage:

On Thursday, when the Leon County Sheriff's deputies were responding to a stolen vehicle in northeast Leon County, a woman whom police say was an initial suspect began firing at them.

Then followed a two hour stand-off between law enforcement and the woman before she shot and killed herself.

Last weekend, there were four shootings, three of which occurred within a two-hour span of each other Sunday morning.

There have been at least 51 serious shootings in the capital city and county that have resulted in at least 29 injuries and 11 deaths, according to an analysis of gun violence by the Tallahassee Democrat.
