Woman killed in 3-vehicle crash near Altamont

May 7—An Altamont woman was killed and an Altamont man injured in a three-vehicle accident along U.S. Route 40 near Altamont Monday afternoon.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:20 p.m. Monday, according to Effingham County Sheriff Paul Kuhns.

Michelle Miller, 44, was transported to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, where she died at 3:44 p.m. Monday, according to the Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes, who noted that Miller was driving an Altamont Unit 10 van.

Unit 10 Superintendent Casey Adam declined to say whether there were students aboard the van. Adam said Miller worked for the district for about two years.

Illinois State Police troopers responded to the accident at approximately 2:45 p.m. The roadway remained closed until approximately 6:40 p.m., according to ISP.

ISP reported that in the moments leading up to the accident, a yellow 2012 Chevrolet truck was traveling south on North 450th Street, near U.S. Route 40. Meanwhile, a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling east on U.S. Route 40 and approaching North 450th Street as a white 2009 Dodge van, driven by Miller, traveled west in the same area on U.S. Route 40.

All three vehicles collided at the intersection of U.S. Route 40 and North 450th Street.

The driver of the red Equinox, a 34-year-old from Altamont, was injured and transported to a nearby hospital, and the driver of the yellow truck, a 54-year-old man from Brownstown, did not report any injuries at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The driver of the yellow truck received a citation for disobeying a stop sign. An investigation of the accident is ongoing.
