Bystander shot during ‘exchange of gunfire’ between a cop and a suspect, police say

A woman suffered a shoulder wound Wednesday night after an “exchange of gunfire” between an officer and a suspect in Liberty City, police said.

The police-involved shooting happened around 9 p.m. in the area of Northwest 66th Street and 22nd Avenue.

According to police, Robbery Intervention Detail detectives attempted to stop a man on a scooter, but when they hit their lights and sirens. The man then began shooting. It was not immediately clear why the officers were stopping the scooter.

At least one officer returned fire. A woman, who was not believed to have been involved, was shot in the shoulder and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“When someone is shooting at you, obviously they have no regard for human life,” police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta told reporters at the scene.

The man took off. Police said a firearm was later recovered and man was detained.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating, as it does with all police-involved shootings involving the Miami-Dade Police Department.
