Man takes his own life in West Miami-Dade. The same bullet wounds his girlfriend

A man shot himself in his West Miami-Dade home early Wednesday morning, with the same bullet that killed him also wounding his girlfriend, Miami-Dade police said.

Four children — ages 12, 10, 9 and one just 5 months old — also were in the home when the gun was fired, Det. Alvaro Zabaleta told reporters during a news conference outside the house in a neighborhood south of the Florida International University main campus.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took the woman to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in stable condition, police said. The man died on the scene in the home in the the 11200 block of Southwest 30th Street.

“We wanted to clarify that it is a suicide that happens to impact someone else,”Zabaleta said. Police did not immediately provide further details on why and how the shooting occurred.

The owners of the home where the shooting happened told Miami Herald’s partner CBS News Miami they were woken up by the sounds of children screaming in the driveway. The homeowners told the TV station they recently rented the house behind theirs to the couple and four kids.

“We just rented them the house like ten days ago,” the homeowner’s daughter-in-law said.
