Identity of Belleville woman killed in weekend shooting released by coroner

A Belleville woman was shot to death Sunday night in her home on Ben Louis Drive, according to the Belleville Police Department.

Megan L. Born, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3 a.m., according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

Lt. Col Mark Heffernan, Belleville’s assistant police chief, said officers were sent to the address at 11:12 p.m. to investigate a report of domestic violence.

“Officers observed a male and female inside the residence, and it appeared the female was unconscious and bleeding,” Heffernan said.

Officers entered to assist the woman and determined she was suffering from at least one gunshot wound, Heffernan said.

“Officers and Abbott EMS attempted life saving measures but were unsuccessful. The male subject (who was in the residence) was taken into custody and transported to Police Headquarters,” Heffernan said.

Belleville detectives and crime scene unit responded to investigate. Detectives applied for and obtained a search warrant for the residence, Heffernan said.

The St. Clair County Coroner’s office was notified and responded to the scene, Heffernan said.

He said the man in custody “will not be identified unless charges are filed in the case.”

The man is being held at the police department, Heffernan said. “Belleville police are not seeking any other suspects,” Heffernan said.
