Woman flown with injuries in crash with bus

Apr. 22—A woman was flown to a Youngstown hospital Monday afternoon with injuries she suffered in a collision with a New Castle Area Transit Authority bus in Shenango Township.

The accident happened around 4:55 p.m. on Route 422 at Willowbrook Road. A medical helicopter landed in the parking lot of Giant Eagle.

According to Shenango Area Fire District Chief David Rishel, the woman pulled out onto Route 422 when they collided. The SUV she was driving ended up flush against the bus in a field and it took rescuers about 25 minutes to cut the roof off the SUV to get her out, Rishel said.

She was conscious but her injuries were unknown Monday evening, he said.

The bus driver, a male, was not injured, Rishel said.

"It was an issue getting to them because both vehicles went into a field," he said.

Heavy traffic on Route 422 also posed an issue, Rishel said. The Shenango Township police and the fire department kept two lanes of traffic open using cones and directing vehicles through the accident area.
