AirTag, accusation and argument end in murder charge after man run over outside Tilly's

Update: Gaylyn Morris was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the June 2022 killing of Andre Smith. Morris was convicted after a three-day trial on Aug. 17, 2023. Morris was sentenced to 18 years in the Indiana Department of Correction on Sept. 21, 2023.

A man was struck by a car multiple times outside a pub on the city's northeast side early Friday and now a woman is facing a murder charge.

Gaylyn Morris, 26, was arrested shortly after Indianapolis Metropolitan Police say officers responded to the parking lot of Tilly’s Pub in the 3900 block of East 82nd Street at about 12:30 a.m. They found 26-year-old Andre Smith in the parking lot underneath a vehicle.

Medics with the Indianapolis Fire Department pronounced Smith dead. The Marion County Coroner’s Office determined he died from being intentionally hit by a vehicle.

Domestic dispute

Morris told a witness she used an Apple AirTag and GPS to follow Smith then found him at the bar with a woman, according to the probable cause affidavit for Morris' arrest.

Morris also told the witness that Smith was her boyfriend and that he was cheating on her. Morris picked up an empty wine bottle before telling the witness she was going to beat up the woman who was with Smith, investigators said.

Morris swung the bottle at the woman but Smith caught it and physically got between the two women, according to the affidavit. All three people were asked to leave the bar, but the woman who was with Smith stayed inside to wait for a food order.

A witness told police she watched from the bar as Morris "pulled forward and clipped the victim (Smith), and he went down, at which time... (Morris) then backed over him and then pulled forward and hit him for the third time," the probable cause affidavit reads.

Morris got out of her car and tried to go after the woman who was at the bar with Smith before officers at the scene detained Morris, according to police.

Jail records show Morris is preliminarily charged with murder. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine final charges. Information on Morris obtaining or being assigned an attorney was not yet available in online court records as of Friday evening.
