Woman escapes burning apartment in Pottsville

POTTSVILLE — A woman was able to escape a fire in a third-floor unit of a city apartment building Thursday evening, a blaze that sent smoke billowing into the air.

The condition of the woman was not known.

The fire at Norwegian Manor Apartments, 20 S. 23rd St., started shortly before 6 p.m. Fire units from throughout the city and surrounding communities responded to battle the blaze.

Firefighters were seen on the roof, ladders were still set up at the building as of 6:30 p.m., and one hose snaked for several blocks. A column of water was visible shooting out of the apartment and through the roof around 6:45 p.m.

About a dozen residents, many who escaped the building with their pets, sat in a grassy area overlooking the apartment building as firefighters worked at the scene.

The apartment complex includes two separate modern red-brick structures with about 20 units in each.

The fire occurred in a residential area with tree-lined streets.
