A woman escaped from an allegedly abusive and armed boyfriend by passing a note to staff at a veterinary hospital, US police said.

Carolyn Reichle, 28, claimed she spent two days being held in a house in Florida and beaten by Jeremy Floyd, 39.

She eventually persuaded him there was something wrong with her dog, according to a police report.

The couple, and the dog, went to the DeLand Animal Hospital.

In a scribbled a message given to a worker Miss Reichle wrote: "Call the cops. My boyfriend is threatening me. He has a gun. Please don't let him know."

Officers arrived and Floyd was arrested and charged with domestic violence, aggravated assault with a firearm, and false imprisonment.

Miss Reichle later told police that Floyd had insisted on coming with her to the vet.

In the car on the way he pointed a loaded gun at her, threatening to kill her and her family, she claimed to police.

Police said she was treated in hospital for a head injury, black eye and bruised arms.

She told officers that while she was being held int he house they struggled over Floyd's gun

Officers late found two bullet holes in a wall at the house.

Police said Floyd was being held without bail.
