Woman dies when Jeep flips over on Bronx highway, passenger critical
A 30-year-old woman was killed early Friday when the out-of-control Jeep she was driving crashed, flipped over and tumbled across a Bronx highway, police said.
A 34-year-old man riding in the Jeep was in critical condition at the hospital following the 3:15 a.m. crash, officials said.
The woman was heading north at a high rate of speed on the Bronx River Parkway when her 2007 Jeep Commander smashed into a guardrail just before the Boston Road exit, cops said.
The Jeep overturned repeatedly as it tumbled away from the guardrail onto a grass shoulder. The woman was thrown from the Jeep as it flipped and died at the scene, police said. Her name was not immediately disclosed.
Firefighters and emergency medical technicians freed her passenger from the mangled wreck and rushed him to Jacobi Hospital, where he is expected to survive but has suffered substantial internal and external injuries, cops said.
It was not immediately disclosed how fast the Jeep was going when it crashed.
Northbound lanes to the Bronx River Parkway were temporarily shut down as the NYPD Highway Collision Squad investigated the crash Friday.
