Woman who was deported to U.S. can return to Canada to care for friend: lawyer

HALIFAX - The lawyer for a 73-year-old American woman who was deported to the United States says she will be allowed to return to Canada to continue caring for her ailing lifelong friend.

Lee Cohen says his client, Nancy Inferrera, can return to Nova Scotia with 83-year-old Mildred Sanford, one day after they left their home in a trailer park in northeastern Nova Scotia for Maine.

The veteran immigration lawyer said he received word today from the federal Immigration Department that Inferrera could return to Canada on a temporary residency permit that allows her to stay for three years.

Cohen says he will drive to northern Maine to pick up the women and bring them back to their home in Guysborough, N.S.

A spokeswoman from the Immigration Department says she could not confirm the government's decision to grant Inferrera a temporary residency permit without the woman's consent.

Cohen said Inferrera came to Nova Scotia in 2008 to live with and take care of Sanford.
