Woman charged with assaulting Oxford, MS police officer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman is now in jail after police say she assaulted an officer at a gas station in Oxford, Mississippi early Sunday morning.

Jacqueline Denise Giles, 36, is charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and possession of a stolen firearm.

On March 3 just before 2 a.m., the Oxford Police Department responded to a disturbance at the Double Quick parking lot where a large crowd was gathered.

That is when a fight broke out between two men next to a gas pump. The officer attempted to break up the fight by pulling on the man who was on top.

During the altercation, the officer stated they felt a cold, metal object pressed against their temple.

The officer was able to quickly turn around and remove the firearm from the suspect, later identified as Jacqueline Denise Giles.

Giles was then taken into custody without further incident.

Police say the gun was reportedly stolen from Oxford back in 2020.

Police Chief Jess McCutchen says there is a reason why more than one officer shows up on a stop or a call. He also stated that this is the second call that could have resulted in a tragedy in less than two weeks.

Giles is currently being held in jail on a $275,000 bond.
