This Woman Brought the Farm With Her When She Moved From the Country to the City
We've bet you've seen beautiful gardens galore in your lifetime, but have you ever seen a flourishing and expansive plant collection in a New York City apartment?
Meet Summer Rayne Oakes, a model, entrepreneur, and rural transplant who lives in a 1,200-square-foot-apartment in Brooklyn that's packed with over 500 plants. According to Modern Farmer, Oakes tends to a living wall of plants, an irrigated vertical garden, a hanging garden system, a breadth of edible plants, a vermiculture kit, and a compost bin in her Williamsburg apartment. She even turned her closet into a garden that grows over 15 different types of plants, including microgreens, sage, tomatoes, potatoes, and a banana tree, according to The Huffington Post.
Before living in her lush city apartment, Oakes grew up in rural Northeastern Pennsylvania on five acres of land complete with chickens, goats, and an orchard. And with just one quick look at her apartment, you can clearly see that Oakes knows a thing or two about gardening.
"I think that the only way I've really been able to survive in New York is by surrounding myself with plants," she told Modern Farmer.
