Woman arrested in Urbana car theft, drug investigation

URBANA. Ill. (WCIA) — A McHenry County woman is under arrest in Urbana after police said she was found in possession of both a stolen vehicle and drugs over the weekend.

Officials with the Urbana Police Department said that on Saturday, an unknown individual was observed removing the license plates off of one vehicle and trying to replace them with the plates of another vehicle. The first car was later determined to be stolen and officers found the keys to be in the possession of 40-year-old Amber Krak.

Krak initially gave officers a false name, officials said, in order to avoid arrest on two active warrants. One was out of Lake County for aggravated fleeing and eluding and driving with a revoked license. The other was out of McHenry County for a hit-and-run accident involving injury or death.

Once officers learned Krak’s real identity, a subsequent search uncovered bags containing meth and crack cocaine, along with a jar of suspected black heroin, and miscellaneous drug equipment.

Champaign County court records indicate that Krak was arraigned Monday on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a controlled substance and obstruction of justice. She pleaded not guilty and requested a trial by jury.

Krak will remain in custody until her trial and a pre-trial hearing has been set for March 19.

Urbana Police are still investigating the car theft and Krak’s involvement. Anyone with further information is asked to call the Urbana Police Department at 217-384-2320 or Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477.
