Woman Arrested After Allegedly Striking Elderly Man, Driving Nearly a Mile with Body Wedged in Windshield: Police

Police in California have arrested a female motorist who allegedly hit an elderly pedestrian on Monday morning and then drove almost a mile toward her home with the man's lifeless body lodged firmly in the windshield, PEOPLE confirms.

A statement from police in Oceanside, California, claims Esteysi "Stacy" Sanchez, 29, drove to her house with the 69-year-old man's head resting on the passenger seat.

Police have not yet released the man's name, pending next of kin notification.

Investigators in Oceanside claim Sanchez was on her way home from a night of carousing when she mowed the man down around 6:20 a.m.

Detectives claim Sanchez hit the unnamed man soon after her car began to swerve down the roadway.

Police say Sanchez ran into the man as he was leaving a soup kitchen.

"The force of the collision caused the victim to go through the windshield of the vehicle and become lodged in the front passenger seat," according to the police statement, which was obtained by PEOPLE.

In addition, the man's leg was detached from his torso, and ended up crashing through the car's rear window, landing on the vehicle's trunk.

After arriving in her neighborhood, police allege Sanchez ditched the car and walked to her home. She was arrested at her house after her boyfriend called police.

"Based on statements obtained from Sanchez and preliminary tests in the field, it was determined she was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision," the police statement reads.

Sanchez has been charged with driving under the influence, hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter. It was unclear Wednesday if she has obtained legal representation.
