Single mom of five Chely noticed something odd 17 years ago, while pregnant with her fourth child – the tip of her nose seemed to be developing a crease. It became worse with her following pregnancy, but no doctor has been able to diagnose the strange condition.

“I’m scared that it’s going to keep growing,” she says, and cut my lip in half.” Chely concludes, “I feel helpless. I always pray that I will find the right doctor.”

Chely’s prayers are answered when The Doctors send her to Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Behrooz Torkian. He diagnoses her with pyogenic granuloma – the condition isn’t uncommon in pregnancy, “But I don’t think anyone’s ever seen one on the tip of the nose.”

Dr. Torkian used Chely’s own cartilage from her nose and ear to reconstruct her nose. Mere weeks later, Chely and Dr. Torkian join The Doctors. “I’m a new person,” Chely announces. “I feel beautiful!” She says that the first two days after the surgery were painful, but after that she was OK.

Dr. Torkian explains that pyogenic granulomas usually grow in the skin or mucous membranes and present as a berrylike cluster. Because Chely’s was located under the skin, as it grew down from her nose to behind her upper lip it interfered with blood supply to her skin. “You just can’t get pregnant anymore!” he jokingly warns Chely.

Plastic Surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon notes that pregnancy can wreak havoc on every bodily system. “Pregnancy is hard!” agrees Ob/Gyn Dr. Nita Landry. “That’s why women do it.”

ER Physician Dr. Travis Stork concludes with a reminder – if you notice sudden body changes during pregnancy, get them checked out!
