Woman accused of attempted murder appears in court

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — On Thursday, Gina Flores appeared in a Mesa County courtroom for a pre-trial readiness conference. She’s charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, first-degree assault, aggravated robbery and theft for allegedly shooting someone in the face.

On Wednesday night Flores’ council filed a motion to throw out “any and all evidence related to IP addresses.” The motion claims the prosecution has not endorsed any expert witnesses to explain IP addresses to the jury. Alexander Yorko, one of Flores’ attorneys, claims this is necessary due to the precedent set in the 2017 case People v. Garrison. Yorko also says the prosecution has not endorsed an expert to testify about GPS data location and asked Judge Gretchen Larson to throw that out as well. In court on Thursday, the prosecution asked for a more specific motion.

The Wednesday motion also asked to throw out any character evidence in the case. The prosecution said they won’t bring it into court unless the defense does first.

Background

The arrest affidavit states on May 29, 2023, Mesa County dispatchers received a call from Intermountain Health St. Mary’s Regional Hospital about a woman with a gunshot wound to the face. The woman told investigators she and Gina were bickering over a mutual friend when Flores allegedly shot her in the face.

The woman stated she didn’t realize she’d been shot and chased Flores off — but not before Flores took her tablet computer and a small bag of money the woman won at a skilled gaming establishment.

Doctors were not able to remove the bullet, declaring it too dangerous.

Flores’ jury trial is scheduled to start on March 12 and last nine days.
