Woman Who Accidentally Gunned Down Boyfriend in YouTube Stunt Sentenced to 180 Days in Jail

Monalisa Perez has pleaded guilty to fatally shooting Pedro Ruiz III on June 26.

A Minnesota woman who fatally shot her boyfriend in a video stunt that turned deadly has been sentenced to 180 days in jail.

Monalisa Perez was still a teen when she accidentally gunned down her boyfriend, Pedro Ruiz III, in what the couple hoped would become their ticket to YouTube fame back in June.

The couple's plan was to shoot Ruiz as he held an encyclopedia against his chest as protection from the .50 caliber bullet that Perez would fire from just a foot away.

In a 911 call, Perez told the operator they'd been "doing a YouTube video, and it went wrong... it's all on recording."

Ruiz was found with a single gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene. Police say they recovered a gold Desert Eagle pistol on the grass near the home.

Perez, now 20, was pregnant at the time and the couple's 3-year-old daughter was nearby when the tragedy occurred.

She entered a guilty plea last week in Norman County District Court.

In addition to the 180 days in jail, the Star Tribune reports that the plea deal stipulates that Perez may not receive any financial compensation from the recording of Ruiz's death and is banned from possessing firearms for life.

The couple had previously posted videos of themselves performing other stunts to their YouTube channel, which have been viewed millions of times since the tragedy.

Perez's official sentencing is likely to be in February.
