Woman and 2-year-old in Monroe suffer burns during robbery and assault

A woman and a 2-year-old child she was babysitting were taken to the hospital with burns they suffered during a robbery on Tuesday, the Monroe Police Department said at a press conference Wednesday.

Lt. Morgan Malone said a man attacked the woman from behind while she was going into a home on East Talleyrand Avenue, and demanded cash.

Malone couldn’t say whether or not the woman knew the attacker.

The man assaulted the woman and burned both her and a 2-year-old, who had second-degree burns to his face and head, police said. The assailant left after robbing the home.

Malone said other kids may have been in the home at the time of the incident. She said she didn’t know what the suspect used to burn the victims, or how.

The woman was transported to a hospital for treatment, and the child was airlifted to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center after the attack, police said. On Wednesday, Malone said the child was being treated at the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in Winston-Salem.
