A lawsuit from a longtime Louisville TV reporter who was injured last year at a high school football game has been dropped, according to court records.

The lawsuit had been filed by Fred Cowgill, sports director for WLKY, against Trinity High School in relation to a knee injury he sustained while covering one of the program's home football games in 2021. Cowgill, who has spent more than 35 years at the station, was reporting on the sidelines when a Trinity running back was forced out of bounds at the 1-yard line during the game and crashed into him.

Cowgill, who said in the lawsuit he had little room to maneuver, said the blow resulted in a torn MCL and dislocated knee cap. The reporter underwent surgery in November and missed 17 weeks of work, according to a report from WLKY.

"He has endured extreme pain and suffering in the past as well as the present," the lawsuit said, "and he will continue to endure pain and suffering in the future as he attempts to recover from his injuries."

WLKY was not involved in the lawsuit, according to a statement from the TV station, which reported in late August that Cowgill had dropped the complaint.

A filing Wednesday from Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Brian Williams dated Sept. 14 confirmed all claims the lawsuit had been dismissed with prejudice and said no settlement money had been paid to the plaintiff by the defendant.
