WJHL Rewind: 2000 Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain
AVERY COUNTY, N.C. (WJHL) – The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games are an annual tradition in Avery County. The event celebrates Scottish heritage and ties to the region and is attended by thousands each year.

In 2000, former News Channel 11 reporter Alex Hayes made her way to the games, where children race in kilts and competitors hurl 60-pound logs and 30-pound weights. She even sampled some Scottish cuisine that may not be in the typical diet.
