Withrow, St. Xavier football teams to meet for 1st time in 22 years

St. Xavier confirmed Thursday that the Bombers football program will play a two-game series with Withrow beginning this fall.

The teams will play at Withrow in 2023 and at St. Xavier in 2024. Both matchups will be in Week 4 of the season.

According to St. X assistant athletic director Joe Penno, the teams have played 29 times, but none since 2001, and only three times since 1967.

St. Xavier has a 14-12-3 all-time record against Withrow. Their first meeting was in 1936, then they played in 1938 and 1939. After that, they played for 23 straight seasons between 1945-67, then again in 1994 and 1995.

The Bombers were 5-7 last year against a typically brutal schedule and lost to Moeller in the second round of the Division I playoffs.

Withrow was 8-4 and champions of the Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference Red Division before losing to Kings in the second round of the Division II playoffs. The Tigers have made recent headlines after Moeller quarterback Luke Dunn and West Clermont wide receiver Chris Henry, Jr. transferred to the program. Withrow returns two first-team all-CMAC selections.

St. X returns one first-team All-Greater Catholic League South selection, Division I prospect Ted Hammond on the defensive line.
