Wisconsin primary - LIVE: State begins voting as Democrats look to topple Governor Scott Walker
Wisconsin voters head to the polls in the state's primaries, with a large pool of candidates fight for the chance to unseat Governor Scott Walker and replace House Majority Leader Paul Ryan.
There are eight Democratic candidates vying for the party’s nomination to go up against Mr Walker, the incumbent Republican governor hoping to hold onto his seat. Tony Evers, the state superintendent and the only Democrat in the race to have been elected in a statewide vote, was leading the polls ahead of Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a close race is underway for Mr Ryan’s seat, with numerous Republican and Democratic candidates alike hoping to take over the southeastern 1st Congressional district. The House majority leader’s former aide Bryan Steil is leading the polls in the Republican primaries, while Randy Bryce and Cathy Myers are facing off on the Democratic ballot. Both candidates have railed against Mr Ryan for his tenure leading Republicans in the House, criticising the party's controversial tax bill and claiming Mr Ryan allegedly provided tax loopholes to the wealthy.
A host of other state seats are also up for grabs on Tuesday, including secretary of state, legislature, treasurer and lieutenant governor. While nearly half of the state’s registered voters typically participate in November gubernatorial elections, primaries in Wisconsin often see just 15 to 20 per cent of overall voter turnout.
Wisconsin is one of four states holding primaries on Tuesday, with voters also making decisions in Vermont, Connecticut and Minnesota.
