Wiregrass agency receives almost $600,000 to help cut energy costs

WIREGRASS (WDHN) — A total of $5.8 million in grants was awarded to Alabama agencies to help citizens weatherize their homes, including one organization in the Wiregrass, the governor’s office announced Thursday.

The Organized Community Action Program Inc., which services Coffee, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Bullock, Barbour, Butler, and Lowndes counties, received $558,584.

The grants were awarded to 13 community agencies across the state.

The funds will help low-income, elderly, and disabled residents weatherproof their homes to lower energy costs. This will include installing extra insulation in the attic, walls, and floor; sealing air leaks around doors and windows; repairs or tune-ups for air conditioning and heating units; and replacing incandescent light bulbs with high-efficiency bulbs

“A change in the weather can lead to a spike in home heating or cooling costs, forcing many to make difficult decisions about how to use their limited funds,” Gov. Kay Ivey said. “These grants will help low-income households make upgrades that will significantly reduce heating and cooling bills.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
