Winner of $12M Illinois Lottery scratch off plans to split money with sons, despite being teased for playing

NILES, Ill. — A lucky Illinois Lottery player is having the last laugh after a scratch off ticket bought at a suburban Jewel won them $12 million.

According to a news release from the Illinois Lottery, the person who won is often given a hard time from their family for buying scratch off tickets. The ticket was purchased at a Jewel-Osco in the 7900 block of North Milwaukee Ave in Niles. After the person realized they won, their sons were the first people called.

“I immediately called my son and squealed ‘I think I won big!’ Next thing I know, he’s yelling at his fiancée to get out of the bathroom so they could come over to see the ticket,” the winner, who is staying anonymous, said. “My sons don’t play the lottery and they love to give me a hard time when I buy my tickets occasionally, so I’d always joke with them saying, ‘When I win, I won’t give you any!’”

Despite the threat, the player said they will split the winnings with their two sons.

When asked what they plan to do with the tremendous jackpot, they added, “We are going to splurge and take our whole family on a vacation so we can celebrate together.”

This is also a big win for the retailer that sold the winning ticket, as the store will receive a selling bonus of one percent of the prize amount. For Jewel-Osco in Niles, that means a bonus of $120,000,  the release said.
