Winfield Correctional inmate dies while on Wichita work detail

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — An inmate of the Winfield Correctional Facility has died while on a work detail in Wichita.

It happened Tuesday afternoon near the Kansas Department of Transportation facility at K-254 and Hillside. The Kansas Department of Corrections says 59-year-old Michael Youngblood was part of a work crew cleaning up trash along the highway when he collapsed.

EMS pronounced him dead shortly after they arrived. Per protocol, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been contacted and will investigate his death. An autopsy will also be performed.

Youngblood was serving a 56-month sentence after he was convicted of drug possession with intent to distribute in 2022 in McPherson County.
