Windy weather blows into Las Vegas valley, expect gusts over 60 mph Saturday

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Wind gusts blowing into the Las Vegas valley will get more powerful by Saturday and could cause damage, power outages, and travel hazards. The National Weather Service in Las Vegas has issued a high wind warning starting at 7 a.m. and ending on Sunday at 10 a.m.

The winds started Friday morning with gusts in some parts of the valley at over 40 miles an hour. Some events around the valley have been rescheduled including First Friday in the Arts District which is postponed until March 8. Also, the Holoholo Market postponed its March 2 event until March 10 due to the weather.

According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, March is the beginning of the windy season for much of the desert Southwest. The strongest winds occur from March through June.

Due to the high winds power outages are possible throughout the weekend. NV Energy said it has multiple crews available to respond to outages over the weekend but outage times may be longer than usual. NV Energy urges anyone who encounters a downed power line to call 911. Clark County also issued an alert about the winter storm and its impact on the nearby Spring Mountains saying travel on Mt. Charleston could be difficult. Six inches of snow is forecast for Mt. Charleston. The county advises people to stay home and wait for improved conditions to visit the mountain.
