Windy Saturday, few storms Sunday

Alerts Issued for Our Region

  • Wind Advisory continues to be in effect for Raleigh, Fayette and Nicholas counties until 7 AM, for western Greenbrier until 10 AM Saturday and for northwestern Pocahontas County until 6 PM. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph will be capable of downing a few trees and causing a few power outages.

Saturday provides our mountain counties the risk for an isolated snowflake early around sunrise but after morning clouds, we’ll see clearing skies with high pressure taking control by late morning area wide. We will see our temperatures respond nicely as well, with highs right around 60. It’ll still be breezy, with wind gusts in excess of 30 mph possible.

Sunday begins on a dry note but by the afternoon, a warm front will cross from southwest to northeast, which will give us the chance for a few late day showers and thunderstorms.

Though our risk is low overall, a strong wind gust or two can’t be ruled out with a couple of those late day storms. If you’re needing to mow the grass, you should be dry before the mid-afternoon. With most of the day being dry and a stout southerly breeze in place, we will see high temperatures jump into the mid 70s.

Monday provides the risk for an isolated shower or two with a weak stationary front stalled nearby but we should see plenty of dry time once again, especially during the afternoon with highs in the low 70s.

Tuesday will be VERY warm! We’ll see that stationary front lift back up to the north as a warm front – a stout southerly breeze will kick in out ahead of our next storm system. A few showers are possible with that warm front lifting up to the north during the afternoon – if we were to see sunshine, we’d make a run at 80 but with the chance for a couple of showers around, we’ll likely fall just short in the mid to upper 70s. The last time we reached 80 degrees in Beckley was all the way back on September 7th!

Wednesday features an increase in cloud cover, with a few showers and thunderstorms possible late in the day as our next system crosses – yet another strong cold front! We will monitor the risk for a strong storm or two with that front crossing. High temperatures will be in the mid 70s.

Only 1 type of tick carries Lyme disease in WV; what to look out for

Thursday will be cooler behind our front, with a few morning showers followed by much drier and sunnier conditions for the afternoon. Highs will be in the mid 60s. Clouds will be on the increase as our next storm system approaches late.

Friday looks wet, with an area of low pressure scooting through. At this point, a wet and dreary day looks likely, with high temperatures in the mid to upper 50s.

What should you do if you are bitten by a tick?

Looking ahead, we drop back below normal for this time of year behind a cold front, as highs on Saturday struggle to jump into the 50s with a couple of morning sprinkles, followed by afternoon clearing. Sunday looks great with high temperatures near 60 under mostly sunny skies. We’ll be in the low 60s by Monday under sunny skies with high pressure in control.

We are in spring forest fire season in West Virginia – this means don’t burn between 7 AM and 5 PM through May 31st. Low humidity values during the daytime, along with breezier and warmer conditions will at times increase the fire threat, hence the burn ban during most of the daytime. Follow all regulations or be faced with potential consequences, such as fines! In Virginia, the spring fire season continues through April 30th – don’t burn before 4 PM.
