Jun. 3—Learn how to save on your energy bill and reduce your carbon footprint with a series of three free workshops this summer.

The series — called "Your Home & Business Toolkit: A Pathway to Energy Efficiency and Cost Reduction" — is a joint initiative of the Creation Care Ministries of First United Methodist Church Waynesville and the WNC Climate Action Coalition.

The first program in the series will be held from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday, June 11, in the gym of First United Methodist Church Waynesville. It will cover tips and tricks for improving energy efficiency, including lighting, HVAC, insulation and more.

Homes and commercial buildings currently account for one-third of the country's greenhouse gas emissions, so even small steps taken by individual home and business owners can have a positive cumulative impact.

The program will be led by William Hite, a Waynesville resident who's a dynamic speaker and expert on energy.

"In 2013, the year I bought my first home, I became interested in energy efficiency," Hite said. "Burdened by the recurring costs of electricity and gas, and concerned about the impacts of humans on a warming climate, I began researching ways to create a more energy efficient home."

Hite's journey included research on tax credits and deductions and led to adding a photovoltaic (PV) array to his home — creating the first Net Zero carbon emissions home in his neighborhood.

Hite's energy resume includes renewables coursework at the NC Clean Technology Center, member of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, participant in Practice GreenHealth conference whose mission is to decarbonize the American healthcare sector, and member of the Green Environmental Management Systems Committee at the VA Medical Center.
