Williamsville South cruises to victory in Class A crossover boys basketball championship

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Williamsville South cruised to a victory in the Class A crossover championship with a 76-53 victory over Olean on Tuesday.

In their first appearance in the crossover game since 2016, the Billies put on a clinic offensively, finishing with four double digit scorers.

“I cant say enough about how well these guys came out and executed — I couldn’t be prouder of how hard they work,” Williamsville head coach Mike Trzybinski said.

“It’s a beautiful feeling, having seen the years prior. Going from not making [it to] Buff State, to making it to Buff State and losing in the finals, to winning finals and pushing on from there, it’s a beautiful thing,” said Billies Carter Lampke.

Lampke lead the way for Williamsville South, leading all scorers with 23. John Opfer (14) Noah Redd (12), and Michael Munzert (11) rounded out the rest of the Billies double-digit performances.

Olean came into the game having won three of the last five Class A2 titles, with their last three wins coming by double figures.

Williamsville South never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after cashing in on second-chance opportunities. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 16-7, with Lampke claiming seven of his team’s points.

Olean cut the Billies’ lead to five in the second quarter but a basket from Nate Wilemski ignited a 12-0 run that lifted Williamsville South to a 32-17 lead at half.

“Last year was the worst feeling in the world to lose in the sectional final. We came into these playoffs knowing that everyone thinks we’re gonna lose, and everyone thinks we cant go as far as we went,” Opfer said. “This team will go as far as we want, and it felt amazing to do this with the people that were here for the loss last year in the final.”

Williamsville South is now set to square off in the regional championship against Section V’s Wayne. The two teams will play at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday at Buffalo State University.
