Williams takes lead over Sharapova in French final

PARIS (AP) — Serena Williams has won the first set 6-4 against Maria Sharapova in their French Open final.

Playing in hazy, warm weather Saturday, Williams took four consecutive games for a 4-2 lead. After Sharapova broke for 4-all, Williams won eight of the next 10 points to clinch the set.

The top-ranked Williams is seeking her 16th Grand Slam title and her first French Open championship since 2002. She came into the match 13-2 against Sharapova, including victories in their past 12 meetings.
