Wild new app transforms Instagram into a online marketplace

A while back, we highlighted a pretty cool website called WornOnTv that lets users know where to purchase articles of clothing worn by characters on popular TV shows. In a similar vein, there’s an increasingly popular iOS app that lets Instagram users identify and purchase objects and articles of clothing they happen to come across on their Instagram feed.

Called Geenee, and available as a free download for iOS and Android , the app is effectively a futuristic shopping companion for Instagram. The way it works is quite simple. With the app running in the background, users browsing through Instagram can take snapshots of any particular photo that happens to catch their eye. From there, Geenee’s proprietary image recognition algorithm gets to work before sending back a notification with a list of all identifiable products along with information on where said products can be purchased.

In scenarios where Geenee can’t find the exact article of clothing in a given picture, the app will still provide users with similar looking alternatives.

If you’re looking to spruce up your wardrobe or even if you’re just curious where some of your fashion-forward Instagram friends do their shopping, you might want to check this app out. Hell, even if you’re just looking for a new app to play around with, Geenee certainly seems like it’s worth giving a spin.

As a quick aside, the startup behind Geenee has already raised $4.4 million in Series A funding.
