Widespread rain and storms will rumble through today

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Yesterday’s incredibly mild temperatures primed the atmosphere for heavy rain and storms in Mid-Michigan today.

Widespread rain is expected to move through late this morning and will continue into the early afternoon before a brief dry window sets up in the late afternoon. Another round of rain and storms will move in around sunset, with isolated showers expected to linger into the early overnight hours.

Temperatures will stall in the 50s across the region, limiting our potential for severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of Mid-Michigan under a Marginal Risk (1 out of 5) for severe storms today, with a low chance for storms to produce damaging wind gusts and hail.

The main threat from these storms will be lightning as well as heavy rain which will reduce visibility. Rainfall totals from this system will be around 0.5″-0.75″ for most of the area, however locally higher amounts will be possible depending on where the strongest of the thunderstorms track.
