Wichita true crime junkies can explore why serial killers fascinate them at Orpheum event

True crime junkies in Wichita will be able to dive deeper into the phenomenon of serial killers at an event happening at The Orpheum Theatre this week. Rachel Toles, a practicing clinical psychologist, crime expert and social media personality, is bringing her event, titled “The Psychology of Serial Killers and Why They Captivate Us,” to Wichita and will address why people become serial killers and why some people fall in love with them. She also promises to help audience members get to the bottom of why they’re so interested in serial killers in the first place. The event happens on Tuesday.

Before that, though, the weekend entertainment calendar in Wichita is also full and features a Friday packed with First Friday art gallery openings, a pirate-themed play at Wichita State University, a day full of family game play at the Wichita Art Museum, and even a mushroom pop up.

Calling all True Crime junkies:, Wichita’s Orpheum Theatre is putting on an event this week titled “The Psychology of Serial Killers” that will feature clinical psychologist and crime expert Rachel Toles offering insight into what makes a serial killer. She’ll talk about topics ranging from why some people become serial killers to identifying myths about them. Doors for the event, which is intended for mature audiences only, open at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and it starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $29.50 to $64.50 and are available at www.selectaseat.com, by phone at 316-755-7328 or in person at the Select-a-Seat box office inside Intrust Bank Arena.

‘Peter and the Starcatcher’

Wichita State University’s School of Performing Arts this weekend will present several performances of “Peter and the Starcatcher,” a play based on the novels by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson that follows the adventures of orphans battling pirates and a tyrant king to protect a trunk filled with magical “starstuff.” Shows at are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday in Wilner Auditorium on the WSU campus. First Friday

Various Wichita art galleries, Friday evening

It’s First Friday in Wichita, which means that many art galleries will be putting on opening-night receptions and welcoming gallery crawlers into their spaces. One of them will be Art House 310 at 310 S. Laura, which will host an opening reception for a new show by color pencil artist Sara Grant and painter Rachel Hermes. Music from the ’90s

My So Called Band, an Oklahoma-based tribute act, will be in Wichita on Friday performing music from the 1990s and early 2000s and covering nearly all genres, including rock, grunge, country, R&B, hip hop and pop. The band is known to cover songs from acts like Nirvana, Cake, Rage Against the Machine, Oasis, Foo Fighters, Britney Spears, Alanis Morissette, Dr. Dre and Eminem, Shania Twain, Green Day and more. The all-ages show starts at 8 p.m. on Friday, and doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $17 in advance and are available at waveict.com

Mushroom pop up

11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sunflour Cafe & Collective, 6120 W. Central

Consider yourself a fun guy? Or girl? Sunflour Cafe & Collective on Wichita’s west side is putting on a mushroom pop up event on Saturday called “You’re a Fungi.” It lasts from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature vendors selling “all things mushroom inspired.” Among the items for sale will be fresh mushrooms, mushroom-themed jewelry, crochet items, artwork, apparel and more. Admission is free.

Fun and games at WAM

11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Wichita Art Museum, 1400 W. Museum Blvd.

This month’s Wichita Art Museum Family ArtVenture is all about “Fun & Games.” It invites families to visit the museum from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to play games stationed all over the building, from yard games to board games. The event, put on by the Friends of the Wichita Art Museum, also will allow attendees to create their own game-inspired artwork to take home, to check out the museum’s new interactive space for families called PLAY, and to watch “speedcubing” competitors quickly solve Rubick’s Cubes during an official competition.
