Wichita man gets 12 years for 2017 shooting of teen

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A Wichita man who pleaded guilty to the shooting of a teen in 2017 was sentenced by a judge on Wednesday.

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said Fabian Griffin, 49, was sentenced to 150 months in prison, which equals out to 12 years and six months. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Nov. 14, 2022.

Court documents state the shooting happened on March 3, 2017. Police were called to the 1700 block of S. Yale just before midnight, where they found three men, aged 42, 25, and 16, inside the home at the time of the shooting.

The 42-year-old was Griffin. The victim, identified by the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, was Casey Lawrukiewicz.

The teenager was transported to a hospital, where he died of his injuries on March 4. The Wichita Police Department told KSN at that time there wasn’t a disturbance inside the home but that the incident involved “the unsafe handling of a weapon by (Griffin).”

The Sedgwick County Judge also ordered $5,000 in restitution to be reimbursed to the Kansas Crime Victims Fund, which paid for the cost of Lawrukiewicz’s funeral.
