Wichita homeless shelter closing, resources available

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – As of Monday, April 1, homeless people in Wichita will no longer have access to the city’s emergency winter shelter. So, advocates are planning an event that day to connect unhoused residents with resources that could help them.

The last full day at the emergency shelter at 21st and Grove is Sunday, March 31. After residents have breakfast at the shelter Monday morning, they will be taken to a Neighborhood Resources event in the parking lot of St. John’s Episcopal Church, 402 N. Topeka.

During the event, unhoused Wichita residents will learn about various services, including mental and physical health, housing assistance, education, employment, and food assistance.

The City of Wichita, Project HopeHumanKind MinistriesBreakthrough/Episcopal Social Services and St. John’s Episcopal Church are hosting the event from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The city is still working on a plan for next year’s winter shelter.

“We continue to work with our community partners on the location for the 2024 winter shelter. We don’t have details to share, but we appreciate the providers who helped keep the unhoused community safe this winter,” Sally Stang, Wichita’s Housing and Community Services director, said in a news release.
