Why 'Vogue' Is About to Break Up with Andre Leon Talley

The 30 year relationship between Vogue and its popular editor Andre Leon Talley is about to come to an end, according to a New York Post Page Six report out Saturday morning. The news is coming at the tail end of New York Fashion Week, when most are still fighting an extended fashion party hangover. If there was ever a time to dump news like this, it's now while everyone is at brunch.

The famous editor-at-large of the fashion magazine has been as prominent a face in the fashion world as Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour in recent years. He repped the magazine on America's Next Top Model, where he became something of a household name while serving as one of the judges. Talley also regularly appears on Entertainment Tonight and has become a fixture of ABC's Oscar fashion coverage. While the icy Anna Wintour holds court in the wings of fashion shows, at the most exclusive dinner parties, and at fundraisers with the President, the likeable Talley became the people's favorite Vogue editor.

But according to the Page Six report, it's that visibility that is at the crux of the conflict between Talley and the fashion bible. A little over a week ago, Women's Wear Daily confirmed that Talley signed on to do his own late-night fashion talk show with former NBC chief Ben Silverman. Going by how Talley describes what the show will be like, it sounds like a Charlie Rose for the Vogue set. Talley said it will be, "a show that blends Dick Cavett’s approach to eloquence and sophistication with unparalleled access into my international fashion lifestyle. A forum where unique stories will be told and inspirations shared." So, everyone is watching this show, right? Because it will be the best? Wrong. The Vogue "powers that be" hate the idea, and his television career, and now they want to end their relationship with Talley completely.

They may want to rethink that, though, considering on Twitter the overwhelming reaction to the news has been disbelief and disappointment. "Boooooo," said one commenter.
