Why UNC baseball isn’t selling NCAA super regional tickets to general public until Saturday

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina baseball tickets for the NCAA Tournament super regionals aren’t available to the public, school athletics officials said Wednesday, though a limited number of standing-room-only tickets will be put on sale just prior to Saturday’s series opener against Arkansas.

The Tar Heels (42-20) host Arkansas (41-19) in the best-of-three series at Boshamer Stadium that starts at 11 a.m. Saturday (ESPN) and continues at 1 p.m. Sunday (ESPN or ESPN2). A third game will be played Monday if necessary. The winner advances to the College World Series.

UNC lists its stadium capacity as 4,100. A crowd of 4,160 filled the place for the regional-clinching victory over VCU on Monday night.

Tar Heels assistant athletics director Gary Paczesny said Rams Club donors, the fundraising arm for UNC sports, and baseball season-ticket holders have gobbled up North Carolina’s ticket allotment for this weekend.

Paczesny said Arkansas received an allotment of 600 tickets that includes the pass list covering the team's family members and friends.

“The tickets we’re required to give Arkansas as the visiting team and what our Rams Club and season-ticket holders consumed, there’s none available to the general public, outside of those standing-room tickets,” Paczesny said. “There was a high contingent of requests from those groups of people.”

Stadium gates will open two hours prior to game times. Last week, UNC sold ticket packages for the four-team NCAA regional at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill that included Georgia, VCU and Hofstra. Costs were $15 for single games and $60 for tickets to the full session.

North Carolina, the No. 10 overall seed in the tournament, is 33-7 at home and has won 19 of its last 22 games.

Parking will be available for $10 in the Rams Head Deck and for free in the Craige Deck on levels 5-9. Free parking also will be available Saturday and Sunday in the Bowles Lot, the Raleigh Road Visitors Lot and on Stadium Drive.

Disability parking will be available for $10 in Rams Head Deck. Ridge Road will be closed to through traffic during the weekend.
