Why it Took Three Tries for Mark Ballas’ Bride BC Jean to Find Her ‘Rock Star’ Wedding Dress

BC Jean wanted everything to be perfect for her wedding to Dancing with the Stars‘ Mark Ballas. And that included finding the dress – no matter how many tries it took to get it right.

“I tried on a few dresses and I’d picked a dress. Then I chose another one. Then, and a week and a half before the wedding, Idan Cohen offered to help design a dress for me,” says Jean, whose Nov. 25 wedding to Ballas is featured in the current issue of PEOPLE. “There wasn’t a lot of time, but how could I say no to that?!”

Jean worked with stylist Monique Lauren to come up with a look and sent sketches to Cohen.

“I knew I wanted something unique and something that no one had ever worn before. I was really infatuated with the 1920s concept of beading and bohemian lining,” says Jean, who topped off the dress with a Marianna Harutunian headpiece. “I wanted something that was romantic and timeless but also edgy and true to my everyday style. I love backless and I did want to show some skin, but I loved the idea of having sleeves.”

Because Cohen lives in Israel, Jean did not get to see the final result in person until two days before her “bohemian” wedding last Thursday. But she couldn’t be happier with the results – and neither could Cohen.

“When I designed BC’s gown, I tried to design for a rock star, but I still wanted to keep the pureness of a bride,” Cohen tells PEOPLE. “I did this by using lots of romantic lace and tulle, adding in black Swarovski diamond stones for that rockstar touch. The balance of these elements fit both BC’s personality and the love shared between her and Mark.”

Jean, 29, also had her “bride tribe” outfitted in white Idan Cohen wedding dresses while Ballas, 30, and his groomsmen wore suits designed by GROOM co-founder Octavious Terry-Sims with ties and other accessories from Rawhyde Manufacturing Co.

“It was incredible. I felt so elegant,” Jean says of her wedding day look. “I basically just added in all the concepts that I’ve been looking at on my Pinterest board and luckily it all worked out.”
