Why you should thank a 911 dispatcher this week

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Several law enforcement agencies are thanking 911 dispatchers this week for National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week.

The week takes place from April 14 to April 20, according to npstw.org.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office in a Monday social media post said its dispatch center answered close to 400,000 calls for service in 2023, a 4.45% increase from the year prior. In Muskegon County, the Muskegon Central Dispatch says its dispatchers take more than 250,000 calls each year.

“Join us in thanking them for their hard work and dedication to keeping our community safe!” it shared in a Monday social media post.

Several other West Michigan dispatch centers took time on Monday to thank its dispatchers, including Newaygo County 911 Central Dispatch.

“One week out of the year is not enough to recognize the men and women of Newaygo County Central Dispatch,” it said in a Sunday social media post. “It takes someone special to do this job every day. Always heard but rarely seen, these men and women are committed to serving the residents, visitors, and first responders of Newaygo County. We celebrate them not just this week, but every week of the year. Thank you to our dispatchers for all that you do!”

How 911 calls weigh on dispatchers’ mental health

In Montcalm County, the dispatch center has been decorated for the week with a ‘tropical stay-cation’ theme. The team will be posting photos from its dress up days this week, it said in a Sunday post.
